Rome (Italy). Faced with the escalation of violence affecting many regions of the world, the International Union of Superiors General (UISG) – representing over 1,900 congregations of consecrated women religious across six continents, the Church is launching a global call for prayer, fasting, and action for peace. It invites everyone to join in an international moment of prayer on Friday 6 March, livestreamed at 3:30 p.m. (Rome time), open to the faithful and all people of good will.
“As consecrated religious women, present in the most fragile contexts of society and close to those who suffer, we cannot remain silent in the face of a spiral of destruction that undermines human dignity and puts the future of new generations at risk,” says Sister Roxanne Schares, SSND, Executive Secretary of the UISG.
The proposal welcomes the heartfelt appeal of Pope Leo XIV at the Angelus on Sunday 1 March, followed by the request for prayer:
I am following with deep concern what is happening in the Middle East and Iran in these dramatic hours. Stability and peace are not built through mutual threats, nor through weapons, which sow destruction, pain, and death, but only through reasonable, authentic, and responsible dialogue.
Faced with the possibility of a tragedy of enormous proportions, I make a heartfelt appeal to the parties involved to assume the moral responsibility of halting the spiral of violence before it becomes an irreparable abyss! May diplomacy regain its role and promote the good of peoples, who yearn for peaceful coexistence, founded on justice. And let us continue to pray for peace.
The moment of prayer can be followed online on the Channel YouTube UISG and accompany the initiative on social media with the hashtag #UISGforPeace.
