Rome (Italy). The Holy Father has appointed Sr. Alessandra Smerilli, Daughter of Mary Help of Christians, Under-secretary to the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development in the “Faith and Development” section.

Sr. Alessandra Smerilli was born on 14 November  1974 in Vasto (CH), Italy. She has a PhD in Political Economy from the Faculty of Economics of the Sapienza University of Rome and a PhD in Economics from the School of Economics of the University of East Anglia in Norwich (United Kingdom). She is a  Full Professor of Political Economy at the Pontifical Faculty of Educational Sciences Auxilium of Rome.

Prof. Smerilli is already committed to the service of the Church and the world as Coordinator of the Economics Taskforce of the Vatican Commission for Covid-19, established by Pope Francis in March 2020, as Councilor of the Vatican City State and as Consultor of the Synod of the Bishops.

The Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development was established by Pope Francis on January 1, 2017 and “promotes integral human development by drawing inspiration from the Gospel and in the wake of the theology and social doctrine of the Church. It studies and collects news and results of investigations about justice and peace, the progress of peoples, the promotion and protection of human dignity and human rights, disarmament and armed conflicts as well as their tragic consequences on the civilian population and on the natural environment. By integrating, relating, and dialoguing between the various social systems – such as economy, finance, work, politics, culture – the Dicastery works to ensure that the social teaching of the Church is made known and put into practice”.

The Prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development is Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson.

The FMA Institute congratulates Prof. Alessandra Smerilli for this new position and wishes her to continue in her commitment to promote greater ethical awareness in the economy and finance, in particular towards young people, the least, the peripheries, for the good  of the Church, the FMA Institute, and the young.
