Rome (Italy). The Italian Embassy to the Holy See has conferred the honor of “Officer of the Order of the Star of Italy” to Sister Alessandra Smerilli, Daughter of Mary Help of Christians Alessandra Smerilli is a member of the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help, founded on 5 August 1872 by St. John Bosco and St. Mary Domenica Mazzarello. The Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, consecrated to God to serve Jesus Christ in community, dedicate their lives to the human, Christian, and Salesian education of young people. Don Bosco chose for them Mary Help of Christians, who knew how to embody and live the pedagogy of caring, which makes their educational passion for young people concrete and makes them women generative of life in the heart of Contemporaneity.

On 24 June 2021, on the initiative of the Ambassador of Italy to the Holy See, Pietro Sebastiani in the cloister of Palazzo Borromeo in Rome on the occasion of the meeting on the theme: “Work is an anointing of dignity. The scourge of precarious and deteriorated work at the dawn of the post-Covid,” on which Sr. Alessandra Smerilli, Salesian economist, and the Minister of Labor and Social Policies, Andrea Orlando dialogued, Sr. Alessandra was awarded the honor of Officer of the Order of the Star of Italy.

“In consideration of the contribution of Sr. Smerilli to the development of the study of civil and Italian economy, of her crucial role in organizing the world event on the Economy of Francis and her top roles in the Vatican City State, and for her constant, continuous, and close collaboration with the Italian Embassy to the Holy See on many issues and events, Sr. Alessandra Smerilli is considered fully deserving of the honor of Officer of the Order of the Star of Italy “(Motivation of the Ambassador of Italy to the Holy See, Pietro Sebastiani).

The Order of the Star of Italy, established by the Law of 3 February  2011, is an honor granted by the President of the Republic, on the proposal of the Minister of Foreign Affairs. With this recognition, we wish to reward those who have acquired particular merits in the promotion of relations of friendship and collaboration between Italy and other countries and in the promotion of ties with Italy.
The Order is divided into five classes: Knight of the Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer, Knight. A special class of Grand Cross of Honor is also established, intended for those who have lost their lives or suffered serious physical disabilities in carrying out activities of high humanitarian value abroad.

Sr. Alessandra is already a Councilor of State of the Vatican City and Under-secretary of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development in the Faith and Development section. Full Professor of Political Economy at the Pontifical Faculty of Educational Sciences “Auxilium” in Rome, she is a Founding Member of the School of Civil Economics, a member of the National Council of the Third Sector in Italy, and of the Ethics Committee SGR (Sustainable and responsible investment solutions ). She is Coordinator of the Economics Taskforce of the Vatican Commission for COVID-19 established by Pope Francis in March 2020. She holds positions in civil society and in Italian institutions, areas in which she actualizes her professionalism and competence in offering an important contribution to the development of the study of Italian civil economy, in particular with regard to young people.

The FMA Institute congratulates Sr. Alessandra Smerilli for this new recognition and wishes her to continue to make her commitment to teaching, research, and promoting an ethical and conscious economy, a service to young people, the Church, Italy, and in the world.
