Canonization of Sister Maria Troncatti: the Program

Rome (Italy). In the imminence of the Canonization of Blessed Maria Troncatti, the Central Commission has prepared a flyer with the program of events which will see the presence of the Superior, Mother Chiara Cazzuola, and all the General Councilors of the Institute. At various times, the Rector Major of the Salesians of Don Bosco, Fr. Fabio Attard, will also be present.

The Canonization of the first Daughter of Mary Help of Christians after the Co-Founder, Saint Mary Domenica Mazzarello, in fact represents an event of grace for the Institute, for the entire Salesian Family, and a gift to the Church, in the already rich context of the celebrations and events foreseen by the Calendar of the Jubilee of Hope.

Furthermore, the testimony of Sister Maria Troncatti “Mother, Missionary, Artisan of Peace and Reconciliation” is proposed to the whole world together with that of the Blessed Ignazio Choukrallah Maloyan (Bishop of Mardin of the Armenians, Martyr), Peter To Rot (father of the family, Martyr in Papua New Guinea), Vincenza Maria Poloni (Founder of the Sisters of Mercy Institute), Maria del Monte Carmelo Rendiles Martínez (founder of the Sisters Handmaids of Jesus, Servants of Jesus of Venezuela), José Gregorio Hernández Cisneros (layman of Venezuela, called “the doctor of the poor”), and Bartolo Longo (lay apostle of the Rosary) who together with her will be Canonized on 19 October  2025.

The opening of the celebrations is scheduled for Friday 17 October at 5pm in the General House of Rome, with a discourse by Mother Chiara Cazzuola, a greeting from the Rector Major, and a presentation by Fr. Pier Luigi Cameroni, Postulator General of the Causes of Saints of the Salesian Family.

The testimony of Juwa Bosco is also expected, who will tell the very special “encounter” he had with Sister Maria in the dream, following which he obtained healing in body and spirit.

The presentation by Fr. Erino Leoni, Vicar of the Lombardy-Emilian Salesian Province and curator, with Mr. Paolo Zini, SDB, of an exhibit on Sister Maria Troncatti, set up in the General House with the possibility of visiting it, will constitute a salient moment of the evening.

The video “…it will be changed into joy” will recall the fundamental stages of Sister Maria’s life, while the songs performed by the novices of the International Novitiate, Mary Help of Christians of Castel Gandolfo will give the tone of celebration and choral thanksgiving. The event will be streamed live on the You Tube channel of the FMA Institute.

On Saturday 18 October, from 3.30pm onwards, the young people of the SYM Italy Youth Movement will animate, “Vamos! Celebrating with Sister Maria Troncatti”, an event aimed at young people from 3^rd Superior and above from the FMA and SDB Provinces of Italy, which will take place in Rome-Cinecittà at Saint John Bosco Institute of the IRO Province.

At 8.45pm, the Rector Major will preside over the Prayer Vigil for the Salesian Family, “A holiness… that is for you too!” which will end with the Goodnight from the Superior General, Mother Chiara Cazzuola.

On Sunday 19 October at 10:30 am, the Holy Father Leo XIV will preside over the Holy Mass and Canonization with the participation of, among others, Salesian Cardinals and Bishops from the Dioceses of Lombardy and Ecuador, the Presidents of the Inter-provincial Conferences, a young person and a missionary representing the youth and FMA of the world, the Mayors of Corteno Golgi (Brescia), birthplace of the future Saint, and of Sucúa (Ecuador), the small town where Sister Maria, her great-grand nieces and nephews, and other relatives lived and died, numerous pilgrims, especially young people, from Lombardy and all over Italy, from Ecuador and other parts of the world. Massive at all the events on the calendar will be the presence of the FMA and various representatives of the different groups of the Salesian Family.

Nel pomeriggio del 19 ottobre, presso la Casa generalizia FMA, il Rettor Maggiore presiederà la celebrazione dei Vespri. La serata proseguirà con una festa, alla quale parteciperanno tutti i convenuti a Roma per la circostanza.

On Monday 20 October, at 11:00 in Paul VI Hall, the pilgrims gathered for the Canonization of the  seven new Saints will be received in Audience by Pope Leo XIV.

At 5.00 pm, at the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, Card. Ángel Fernández Artime will preside over the solemn Eucharistic celebration of thanksgiving for the Salesian Family. Concelebrating will be Monsignor Andres Carrascosa Coso, Apostolic Nuncio to Ecuador; Monsignor Néstor Montesdeoca, Apostolic Vicar of Méndez, Ecuador; Monsignor Pierantonio Tremolada, Bishop of Brescia; Fr. Fabio Attard, Rector Major of the Salesian Congregation; Bishops and presbyters of the Dioceses of Ecuador and Italy.

Mother Chiara Cazzuola, in presenting these initiatives wrote, “We hope to live together the great gift of holiness that the Lord continues to pour abundantly on the entire Church, on the Salesian Family, on the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, on the Educating Communities.

Faced with the cry for help of the young people of our time, we seek to respond with the strength and courage of our Holy Founders and, through the intercession of Sister Maria Troncatti, we ask the Lord to grant us and all humanity the needed gift of peace.”
