Genoa (Italy). On the vigil of the Solemnity of Saint John Bosco, celebrated by the entire Salesian world on 31 January 2025, the story of the finding – in the attic of the House of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians of Our Lady of the Cenacle Province (ILS) – of a painting depicting the Saint of the young signed by the Ligurian painter Giovanni Bottai (1904-1978), nourishes the atmosphere of celebration.
The Animator of Mary Help of Christians Community, Sister Anna Maria Spina, shares the joy of the “discovery”:
“I arrived in Genoa at the end of August and on September 12, while I was beginning to know the house in its crevices, I made a discovery in attic. Half hidden, behind an image of Mary Help of Christians now faded by time, there was a picture.
A very modest frame, a setting of a home and a fireplace and a unique black shoulder. My curiosity was immediately aroused and I moved those images that covered it to see if the one depicted was really Don Bosco. I was not disappointed.
Under a thick layer of dust, there was Don Bosco, pictured as in the 1886 photograph of Sampierdarena. He looked at me with a pleasant and almost smiling face as if to say, ‘You found me!’.
I took that painting and brought it to the community. I wanted to know if someone had seen it before, if someone knew where it came from and who gave it to the community… but none of them seems to have noticed it. Then the signature: G. Bottai 1969.
I did a very short search on the internet to find that Giovanni Bottai is a painter of Liguria ‘900, who has made several exhibitions of his works also in Genoa, the first of which in Sampierdarena. The mystery about the history of this painting and how it reached our attic remains open, but meanwhile we have returned this painting to a wall.
Don Bosco now shows his smile in the office of the Animator and those who see him are amazed. An original image of Don Bosco that seems to show in a simple and effective way what a Salesian house is: the warmth of a burning fireplace, the simplicity of a family environment, the centrality of the crucifix, a window open on the world.”

Grande, immenso Don Bosco!
Sono stato 3nanni presso l’Istituto dei Salesiani di Marsala e li ho vissuti meravigliosamente. Il terzo anno c’era la gara siciliana di clero per servire la santa messa in latino. Era il 1963. Sono stato campione siciliano di clero premiato a Catania con una bella medaglia d’oro applaudito da tutti i vescovi siciliani. Dolcissimi ricordi presso la santa chiesa Maria Ausiliatrice.
