Rome (Italy). On 5 March 2024, the Press Office of the Holy See announced that Holy Father Francis assigned Cardinal Ángel Fernández Artime, Salesian of Don Bosco, Rector Major of the Salesian Society of Saint John Bosco, to the titular See of Ursona, with archbishopric dignity, in view of his episcopal ordination, scheduled for 20 April 2024.

Ángel Fernández Artime, 10th successor of Don Bosco at the head of the Salesian Congregation – elected the first time in 2014 and confirmed on 9 July 2020 – was announced Cardinal by Pope Francis after the Angelus on Sunday, 9 July 2023, and received the cardinal’s hat and ring at the Ordinary Public Consistory on 30 September.

On 4 October 2023, he received his first assignment in the Roman Curia, being appointed member of the Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life (DIVCSVA).

Then, on 17 December 2023, Cardinal Fernández Artime took possession of the diakonia of Saint Mary Help of Christians in via Tuscolana, assigned to him by the Pontiff himself.

According to the provisions for the Salesian Congregation established by the Holy Father, Cardinal Fernández Artime has already convened the 29th General Chapter of the Congregation (which will take place from 16 February to 12 April 2025). During the General Chapter, his Successor at the helm of the Salesian Society will be elected. After his resignation as Rector Major, he will make himself available to the Holy Father for the mission that will be entrusted to him.
