Rome (Italy). Sr. Teresa Joseph, Daughter of Mary Help of Christians of the St. Mary Mazzarello Province (INB) was appointed Catholic representative to the Commission for World Mission and Evangelization (CWME) of the World Council of Churches (WCC).

Cardinal Kurt Koch, Prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity (DPCU), on 29 May 2023, sent the Letter of appointment to Sr. Teresa:

“Upon the recommendation of the Executive Secretary of the International Union of Superiors General, I am pleased to appoint you as Catholic representative to the Commission on World Mission and Evangelization (CWME) of the World Council of Churches (WCC) for the period 2023-2030. […]

Grateful to the Executive Secretary of the International Union of Superiors General for appointing you, and to you for accepting this appointment, I ask God’s blessing for this task and for your other ministries and responsibilities.”

Born in 1961, CWME offers a space to share reflections, experiences, and theological insights on the contents and methods of Christian witness today. The Commission is made up of about 35 people from almost all Christian traditions, including three Catholics. The full Commission meets every two years (the first meeting of the new mandate is scheduled for spring 2024), while smaller thematic groups work between plenary meetings, organizing meetings online or in person.

The main commitment of CWME is to enable the Churches, missionary bodies, and other agencies to be united in the mission according to the Gospel, inspired in particular by the prayer of Jesus “that they may all be one… that the world may believe” (Jn 17 :21). To this end, it promotes conferences, consultations, seminars, study processes, publications, and visits, correspondence or other forms of contact, for the good of the mission and unity of all Christians. Missionary formation and theological education are important dimensions.

Sr. Teresa Joseph obtained a Master’s degree in Educational Sciences with a specialization in Catechetics at the Pontifical Faculty of Educational Sciences “Auxilium” in Rome and a Doctorate in Missiology with a specialization in Interreligious Studies at the Gregorian University in Rome. She has developed a rich academic activity and was a member of the editorial board of the Indian national catechetical directory. She is currently a Community Animator at the Auxilium Welfare Center in Koregaon Park, Pune; Provincial Coordinator for Evangelization, the ad / intra gentes mission and catechesis; and a core member of the Salesian / Diocesan Catechetical Center in Koregaon Park, Pune.

On receiving the Letter of Appointment, she expressed herself as follows:

“In the certainty that it is the Holy Trinity that continues to work miracles in the Church and in the world, and with the blessing and prayers of His Eminence Cardinal Koch Kurt and his collaborators, I undertake this new commitment with great hope. I am very grateful to the Executive Secretary of the International Union of Superiors General for appointing me.

With the awareness that I am supported by the prayers of our dear Mother Chiara Cazzuola, of the General Council, of my Provincial, Sr. Meenakshi D’Silva, of all the FMA and of those with whom I am in contact in the mission, I welcome with joy this new task that is entrusted to me.”

Best wishes to Sr. Teresa for a fruitful mission in the field of evangelization of peoples, bringing the specifics of the Salesian charism.
