Genoa (Italy). From 25 to 29 May 2024, the 32nd edition of the International Salesian Youth Games takes place in Genoa, an event of healthy sporting competition and an opportunity for cultural exchange, sharing, friendship, respect, in the name of the values that distinguish PGS International (PGSI), the international organization that brings together the Salesian Youth Sports Centers (PGS).

More than 800 boys and girls between 14 and 18 years of age, coming from all Italian regions and from Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Germany, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Ukraine, and Hungary came together to give their best in competitions of basketball, volleyball, five-a-side soccer, table tennis, and other sports.

#Weareallstars is the slogan of the event. “It reminds us that inside each of us there is a light. Each of us has special gifts, unique talents that we are called to draw out, to make shine. It is a slogan addressed to our young people. It is important, dear young people, to show what you are inside, your gifts, to put them at the service of the world, of those who are close to you, because nothing and nowhere that you pass should remain the same. But it is also a slogan addressed to us adults, educators, coaches, managers, because the purpose within our PGS is to accompany young people to find this light inside them, to draw it out, and grow as people through sports. We are all stars!” explains Sister Francesca Scibetta, National PGS Representative of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians.

It is therefore a great experiential event in which the protagonists are young people and, at the same time, the city that hosts sports competitions: the International Salesian Youth Games are in fact part of the calendar of events of Genoa 2024 – European Sport capital, award given for the year 2024 by ACES Europe, Federation of European Capitals and Cities of Sport.

The experiences in the Games program are tailor-made for young people and alternate moments of sport with moments of educative leisure, from city visits to convivial evenings with the PGS Village as a reference point for sharing and socializing. PGS Village is hosted by Music for Peace, a humanitarian organization that deals with raising awareness of citizenship and concrete help in support of people in difficulty in Italy and abroad, located a few steps from the Lantern of Genoa, symbol of the city.

“It is an atmosphere of celebration, of sport, in a significant place because we are inside Music for Peace and in these days, we will instead do Sport for Peace. I like to emphasize the representation of many, many young people. Sport can be a vehicle of peace, an alley of education, a vehicle for a better world”, motivates the choice of Fr. Francesco Preite, Salesian of Don Bosco, President of APS Salesians for Social.

The International Salesian Youth Games officially opened on 26 May. After Holy Mass in the Cathedral of San Lorenzo presided by Mons. Marco Tasca, Archbishop of Genoa, hundreds of young people flocked to Porto Antico for the opening ceremony.

On the stage of the Sport Festival of Stars in Sport, to open the event were the President of PGS International Georg Leibold; the President of PGS Italy, Ciro Bisogno; the President of CR PGS Liguria Claudio Alvisi; the President of Salesians for Social APS, Fr. Francesco Preite; and FMA Representative, Sister Francesca Scibetta. Also present were: Silvia Salis, Vice President Vicar of CONI; Simona Ferro, the Councilor for Sport of the Liguria Region; Alessandra Bianchi, the Councilor for Sport of the City of Genoa; Antonio Micillo, the President CONI, Liguria Regional Committee; Michela Carfagna, Regional Coordinator of Sport and Health of Liguria.

Mother Chiara Cazzuola, Superior General of the FMA Institute, made herself present with a wish:

“Dear athletes, managers, coaches, and technicians who together, live the wonderful adventure of the 32nd edition of the PGS International Games in Genoa, I reach you with affection and closeness. I hope that these days will be lived in an atmosphere of healthy competition, friendship, and Salesian celebration. Aware of the many energies that have certainly been employed for the success of this event, I ask Mary Help of Christians to reward all of you with her blessings and her protection. Be bright stars that show everyone paths of peace and hope! With great esteem and sincere affection“.
