Rome (Italy). In line with the Synod on: Young People, Faith, and Vocational Discernment (Cf. Working Document nos. 213-214), in the month of January, we share the fourth study on the journey of accompaniment in the youth of Saints, Blesseds, Venerables, and Servants of God.
Accompaniment in Laura Vicuña
Holiness in Laura was built in connection with others in special circumstances that, although they were adverse, gave her the opportunity to grow. Laura is the type of young woman for whom the Salesian charism exists: a poor girl, abandoned and in danger, beloved by the heart of God.
In the “Mission of Junín” Laura meets a new family with a way of being and doing that opens beneficial horizons to her and marks her life in a positive way. In contrast to the violence and oppression that she lives at home, Laura sees and experiences another way of life, without fear, without threats, without forced submission. She feels welcomed and cared for, she can then express her best. Salesian educators discover her reality and her potential and accompany her in her profound search.
In the Sisters and Salesians, Laurita meets educators with firm and tender features that generate an ecosystem in which one experiences a special pedagogy, the pedagogy of the environment that Don Bosco and Mother Mazzarello had dreamed of and realized for all those who would enter a Salesian house.
They were not ‘saviors’, but through them God saved, responded to the cry of this little girl who began to love Him with an ardor that was almost folly.
Only love saves, heals, repairs. The Lord gives us immense daily possibilities for salvation and victory, to leave the bonds that surround and kill. Laura chose Jesus and with Him and through the mediation of the Sisters and Salesians, she met Love and decided to give herself totally to Him. Thus her life became fruitful.
