Calcutta (India). On 22 April 2025, various Communities of Mary Help of Christians Province (INC) in Calcutta celebrated Earth Day 2025: Auxilium Convent School di Bandel, Auxilium Convent School and Don Bosco Tech of Barasat, Auxilium Snehadhan of Bareilly, Auxilium Convent School of Calcutta Dum Dum, Auxilium Convent of Calcutta Gobra, St. Mary’s Convent School of Geyzing, St. Anthony’s Convent School of Jaigaon, Vicuña Nivas of Jumaikela, Auxilium Convent of Kalyani, Auxilium Convent of Mirik, of New Delhi-Najafgarh, of New Delhi R.K. Puram, of New Delhi Vasant Vihar, of New Chumta, Mazzarello Convent of Ranchi, Sacred Heart Novitiate, and Auxilium Convent of Jhorahat.
“Our Power, Our Planet” was the theme of this year, with which we wanted to underline humanity’s collective responsibility towards Mother Earth. In the introduction to the day, the significance of this annual event celebrated around the world since 1970, on 22 April has been taken up again.
The students gave an introductory speech that set the tone for the day, highlighting the importance of protecting the planet and uniting for a sustainable future. The celebration began with a prayer led by the students themselves, to thank and praise God for the gift of all creation.
During the celebration, students brought various symbols representing the elements of nature, such as the Earth, a globe, mud, water, a plant, a flower, soil, fruit, and more. Each symbol was intended to remind us of the beauty and richness of the natural world and the urgent need to preserve it.
An impressive dance performance represented the deep bond between humanity and nature, symbolizing their harmony and coexistence. The dance was followed by an original performance of a trilingual lyric poem in English, Hindi, and Bengali, as well as group and solo songs that showcased the beauty and diversity of the environment and the urgent need to preserve it.
The Directors and Principals addressed the assembly, acknowledging the efforts of students and teachers and encouraging all to be active custodians of the earth. The students, staff, and FMA then made a commitment to care for and protect Mother Earth, reaffirming the importance of being responsible citizens and defenders of the environment. Subsequently, a drawing competition was held for all the students, created during their free time.
The Sisters of various communities experienced moments of prayer for creation in which they touched with their hands the deep love for the Creator and for His creation. They reflected on how to safeguard nature in everyday life for future generations. The celebration of Earth Day served as a concrete reminder of our duty to the environment and stimulated everyone to act with care, compassion, and responsibility towards our common home.
