Rome (Italy). On 24 February 2024, in the Aula Magna John Paul II of the Pontifical Faculty of Educational Sciences “Auxilium” in Rome, the first of three events of the formative journey, “Custodians of the Garden” Integral Ecology Educational is held organized by the Laudato Si’ Circle of the Faculty, in collaboration with the diocesan Caritas of Rome, the association Greenaccord, and the magazine Earth and Mission.

The first meeting will explore some issues related to climate change and migration. Starting from the observation that in the present time there is humanity forcibly on the way and that migration is growing due to the climate crisis, we will try to answer some questions: Who are the “eco-refugees”? What is the existing legal framework? Will we also be climate migrants in 2050?

The morning program, moderated by Giuseppe Carrisi, journalist:

9:00 – Initial greetings from Amaya Valcàrcel, researcher of the Migrants and Refugees Section of the Dicastery for Integral Human Development, and Giustino Trincia, Director of Caritas Rome.

9:20 – Introduction to the theme by Sister Linda Pocher, FMA.

9:30 – First session

Eco-refugees and climate refugees. Forced migrations of yesterday, today, and tomorrow, Valerio Calzolaio, Member of Parliament for 4 legislatures, Undersecretary of the Ministry of the Environment (1996-2001), UN-UNCCD consultant (in 2002 and from 2006 to 2009). Journalist and essayist since 1979, he has collaborated with numerous national newspapers.

11:20 – Second session

Human mobility in times of climate change.                  
Oliviero Forti, head of Office of Migration Policy and International Protection of Caritas Italy. For over 20 years he has been dealing with issues related to human mobility.

The formative Journey

The project of ecological formation, launched in the academic year 2022-2023, aims to deepen some issues related to ecology, encourage a change of mentality, provide tools to educate young generations to respect, to the care of creation, and the assumption of the concept of integral ecology.

Target audience: students and teachers of the Faculty and other Universities, Teachers of religion, professional educators, education psychologists, school leaders, pastoral workers and catechists, journalists, parish pastors and priests, men and women religious, teachers of all levels, parents, anyone involved in educating young people, and adults and interested in the topic

Each meeting is proposed to the National Order of Journalists as a Course of Continuing Professional Formation for a total of 4 credits.

To participate in the formation course, registration is required by completing the module online.
