An economic crisis, with rising prices; a crisis due to the loss of job opportunities. A social crisis, with millions of displaced people and young people on the run. A basic health crisis; and an educational crisis, with a generation that has lost five years of schooling.”

Five years after the military coup, the Country is marked by fear, weariness, and profound uncertainty, especially among young people. “Hope,” the Cardinal observed, “is not dead, but crucified.”

Young people under pressure

Cardinal Bo acknowledged that general sentiment varies depending on personal experiences and proximity to violence. Among young people, daily life is increasingly defined by insecurity, psychological stress, and a loss of confidence in the future. Many live in constant fear for their safety due to conflict, widespread violence, economic instability, and the risk of forced recruitment.

Loss of education and employment

The years of turmoil have eroded education, job prospects, and normal social life. Many young people express frustration, sadness, and helplessness. However, the Cardinal also highlighted signs of resilience. Some continue to believe in a better future, investing in education and new skills, including digital technologies.

Hope is crucified but alive

Despite everything, the cardinal insists that hope remains possible. “It is not naive optimism, but Christian hope born of the Cross and the Resurrection.” The people of Myanmar have lost many certainties—peace, stability, international attention—but they have not lost the presence of God.

This presence is evident in the displaced villages, in the camps for internally displaced people, and in the silent resistance of families, catechists, and religious who continue to serve. Families share what little they have; young people volunteer and do not give up on their dreams. They are “signs of the Gospel,” like the mustard seed.

Not forgotten by God

Many in Myanmar feel forgotten by the world, but not by God. “Myanmar may seem neglected, but it is not forgotten in God’s plan,” the Cardinal said. The Church continues to call for an end to violence and reconciliation based on justice, forgiveness, and compassion. Interfaith initiatives bring together Christians, Buddhists, Muslims, and Hindus in common prayers for peace. The Cardinal reiterated that Myanmar is not forgotten by the Holy See. The Pope is deeply concerned and demonstrates this with repeated appeals for peace, dialogue, and the protection of civilians.

“Brothers and sisters, I invite you to join me in praying for those affected by armed conflicts in various parts of the world. I think in particular of Myanmar, and I urge the international community not to forget the Burmese people and to provide the necessary humanitarian assistance” (General Audience, 5 November 2025).

Finally, Cardinal Bo called for perseverance in faith and hope: “Losing hope would mean handing over the future to violence and desperation. We hope, not because the situation is easy, but because God is faithful.”

Meanwhile, the bombings do not cease and many villages, where there are also relatives of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians and the Novices of Mary Our Help Province (CMY), many homes are burned and destroyed, forcing the population to flee:

“In my village, the civil war has become very intense. My older sisters, my uncles, and many of our relatives have homes along the main road.
