Rome (Italy).<\/strong> From 18 to 25 January 2026, between the Feast of the Chair of St. Peter and the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul, the Northern Hemisphere celebrates the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, an ecumenical initiative in which Christians from around the world, belonging to different traditions and denominations, gather spiritually in prayer for the unity of the Church.<\/p>\n

In the Southern Hemisphere, where January is a holiday, churches celebrate this on other dates, such as Pentecost. Beyond the temporal scansion, the important thing is to highlight the need to create opportunities throughout the year to pray for communion and dialogue between churches and to strive for unity, according to the desire of Christ Himself.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling\u201d <\/strong>(Ef 4:4) is the proposed theme for this year 2026. St. Paul recalls that we are all called to live in communion and that, through dialogue, collaboration, and common witness,\u00a0 can we build a united and strong Church, capable of facing the challenges of this time (cf. Eph 4:1-3) to thus realize Christ’s vision for His Church: a united body, reflecting His glory and love in the world and committed to peace, justice, human dignity, and the right to one’s Country.<\/em><\/p>\n

The resource for the\u00a0 Week 2026<\/strong><\/em> was developed by the International Commission appointed by the Dicastery for the Promoting Christian Unity (DPUC) and the Faith and Constitution Commission (F&C) of the World Council of Churches (CEC), which met from 13 to 18 October 2024, at the Holy See in Etchmiadzin, Armenia. During the meeting, chaired by the Reverend Dr. Mikie Roberts of the CEC and the Reverend Fr. Martin Browne, O.S.B, of DPUC, representatives of the Armenian Local Group cooperated with the International Commission. On 17 October 2024, members of the Local Group and the International Commission were received in audience by His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All the Armenians.<\/em><\/p>\n

The Armenian Apostolic Church is part of the Eastern Orthodox tradition and is dotted with the presence of numerous martyrs. Its rituals, in theological and liturgical fields, influenced by ancient Christian customs and Armenian cultural influences, reflect an intense spirituality. It has a thriving tradition of ecumenism and is committed to building relationships with other Christian communities. In recent decades, it has initiated dialogue with various denominations, including the Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant Churches, seeking common ground with all of them while preserving its unique heritage. Participation in the World Council of Churches and its relations with the Vatican and other ecumenical bodies demonstrate its commitment to Christian unity and progress in mutual understanding.<\/em><\/p>\n

On his first apostolic journey to Turkey and Lebanon, with a pilgrimage to \u0130znik on the occasion of the 1700th <\/sup>anniversary of the First Council of Nicaea – held from 27 November to 2 December 2025 – Pope Leo XIV experienced numerous ecumenical moments<\/strong> and in his interventions stated that \u201cthe desire for reconciliation that comes from all humanity afflicted by conflict and violence and the desire for full communion among all believers in Jesus Christ is always accompanied by the search for fraternity among all human beings. The use of religion to justify war and violence, like any form of fundamentalism and fanaticism, must be forcefully rejected, while the ways forward are those of fraternal encounter, dialogue, and collaboration\u201d<\/em> (See Apostolic Journey to Turkey Ecumenical Meeting of Prayer near the archaeological excavations of the ancient Basilica of St. Neophytos in \u0130znik<\/em>, 28 November 2025).<\/p>\n

The unity of Christian churches is a fundamental call that requires collective commitment. Overcoming historical divisions, addressing contemporary challenges, and working together for the common good are essential steps to achieving this unity.<\/p>\n
