Rome (Italy).<\/strong> On 28 October 2025, on the 60th\u00a0 anniversary of the Conciliar Declaration Gravissimum educationis <\/em>\u201con the extreme importance and relevance of education in the life of the human person\u201d<\/em> and during the Jubilee\u00a0 of the World of the Education<\/a><\/span><\/strong>, the Apostolic Letter \u201cDrawing new maps of hope\u201d,<\/strong> signed by Pope Leo XIV on 27 October at the foot of the Altar of Confession in St. Peter’s Basilica, is published before the Mass with the students of the Pontifical Universities.<\/p>\n

The Foreword emphasizes the relevance of the conciliar text<\/strong>, \u201cWith that text, the Second Vatican Council reminded the Church that<\/em> education is not an ancillary activity, but forms the very fabric of evangelization<\/em><\/strong>. It is the concrete way in which the Gospel becomes an educational gesture, a relationship, a culture. Today, faced with rapid changes and disorienting uncertainties, that legacy shows surprising stability\u201d<\/em> (1.1).<\/p>\n

He continues, \u201cThe Declaration <\/em>Gravissimum educationis<\/em> has not lost its relevancy<\/em><\/strong>. From its reception was born a firmament of works and charisms that still guides the path today: schools and universities, movements and institutes, lay associations, religious congregations, and national and international networks. These institutions have generated and consolidated a spiritual and pedagogical heritage, capable of responding to the most pressing challenges, a heritage that is not a script<\/strong>. It is a compass that continues to indicate the direction and talk about the beauty of the journey\u201d<\/em> (1.3).<\/p>\n

Challenges and expectations unfortunately are still relevant after 60 years. Faced with the many millions of children in the world who do not yet have access to primary education, how can we fail to act? Faced with the dramatic situations of the educational emergency caused by wars, migration, inequalities, and various forms of poverty, how can we fail to feel the urgency of renewing our commitment?<\/em><\/strong> Pope Leo encourages hope with a phrase from his recent Apostolic Exhortation Dilexi te<\/a><\/strong><\/span>: <\/em>\u201cEducation ‘is one of the highest expressions of Christian charity’. The world needs this form of hope.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

In the 2nd<\/sup> chapter, we read a brief summary of the history of Catholic education as \u201chistory of the Spirit at work\u201d and, as in Dilexi te, several Saints and \u201ccourageous women\u201d are mentioned who contributed to favoring “the least” in access to education, including Saint John Bosco<\/strong> who \u201cwith his \u2018preventive method\u2019, transformed discipline into reasonableness and closeness\u201d(2.3).<\/em><\/p>\n

Another very Salesian aspect emerges in the document, that of Christian education as \u201cchoral work<\/strong>: no one educates alone\u201d and therefore of the \u201ceducating community<\/strong>\u201d understood as \u201ca \u2018us\u2019 where the teacher, the student, the family, the administrative and service staff, the pastors, and civil society converge to generate life.\u201d The splendid harmony between the Saints also emerges, such as Saint John Henry Newman, whom the Holy Father on November 1 declared Doctor of the Church and co-patron of the educational mission of the Church together with Saint Thomas Aquinas, who had as his cardinal motto Cor <\/em>ad cor loquitur<\/em>, from a letter from Saint Francis de Sales, “The sincerity of the heart and not the abundance of words, touches human hearts” (3.1).<\/em><\/p>\n

Then there are different \u201cdefinitions\u201d of the \u201cprofession of educating\u201d enunciated, such as \u201cEducating is an act of hope and a passion that is renewed\u201d<\/em><\/strong>; it is a \u201cprofession of promises\u201d; \u201cit is a task of love that is handed down from generation to generation.\u201d <\/em>We also talk about what must not be, that is, it must not be reduced \u201cto workforce training or an economic tool; a person is not a \u2018skills profile\u2019, nor to be reduced to a predictable algorithm, but a face, a history, a vocation\u201d<\/em><\/strong> (4.1).<\/p>\n

Other principles dear to the Salesian tradition are an integral anthropological vision<\/strong> which \u201cembraces the whole person: spiritual, intellectual, affective, social, corporeal\u201d <\/em>and which \u201cdoes not measure its value only on the axis of efficiency\u201d<\/em>, but rather \u201con dignity, on justice, on the ability to serve the common good\u201d<\/em> (4.2). It is an education that seeks to respond to the challenges of today \u201cbecause every generation is new, with new challenges, new dreams, new questions.\u201d <\/em>\u00a0We must \u201crebuild trust in a world marked by conflicts and fears, remembering that we are children and not orphans<\/strong>, from this awareness fraternity is born\u201d<\/em> (4.3). And continuing, it is an education that knows how \u201cto put the person at the center,\u201d<\/em><\/strong> to form men and women of virtue, freer, \u201ccitizens capable of serving and believers capable of bearing witness,\u201d<\/em> where the educational alliance<\/strong> with the family is \u201ceffort and blessing\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n

An inspiring image that recurs in the document, as suggestive as it is concrete, is that of the \u201cconstellation\u201d<\/strong> (Ch. 8) \u201cbecause the Catholic educational world is a living and plural network\u201d<\/em> with \u201cfixed stars\u201d<\/em> and stars of \u201ctheir own luminosity,\u201d<\/em> but which \u201call together draw a course.\u201d<\/em> In fact, \u201cthe plurality of charisms, if well-coordinated, composes a coherent and fruitful framework,\u201d<\/em> even if it must be admitted that \u201cthe future requires us to learn to collaborate more, to grow together.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Among the stars that guide the path, the \u201cNorth Star\u201d is the Global Educational Pact<\/em> (Ch. 10), a prophetic legacy of Pope Francis collected \u201cwith gratitude\u201d<\/em> by his successor, \u201can invitation to form an alliance and network to educate for universal fraternity,\u201d<\/em><\/strong> with its seven paths that \u201chave inspired schools, universities, and educational communities around the world, generating concrete processes of humanization.\u201d<\/em> To these seven ways, Pope Leo adds three priorities: the interior life<\/strong> \u2013 \u201cyoung people ask for depth;\u201d <\/em>the human digital<\/strong> \u2013 \u201cwe form in the wise use of technologies and AI, putting the person before the algorithm;\u201d<\/em> unarmed and disarming peace,<\/strong> \u201cwe educate to non-violent languages, reconciliation, bridges and not walls.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Within the text there is also no shortage of essential educational themes such as the promotion of the protection of creation, ecological responsibility, and peace (Chapter 7). There is also a correct approach to technologies and the digital environment (Chapter 9) to inhabit and that requires, \u201cpastoral creativity,\u201d<\/em> as well as \u201cdiscernment on educational planning.\u201d<\/em> There must be the conviction that \u201cno algorithm will be able to replace what makes education human<\/em><\/strong>: poetry, irony, love, art, imagination, the joy of discovery and even, education in error as an opportunity for growth. The decisive point is not technology, but the use we make of it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

60 years after the Gravissimum educationis<\/em> and five years after the Global Educational Pact<\/em>, while celebrating a \u201cfruitful educational history\u201d, heartfelt is the Pope’s call to update as a Church, the proposals in the light of the times. \u201cIt is not enough to conserve: we need to relaunch\u201d<\/em> – he says – and asks \u201call educational realities to inaugurate a season that speaks to the hearts of the new generations, recomposing knowledge and meaning, competence and responsibility, faith and life\u201d<\/em><\/strong> (10.2).<\/p>\n

In formulating these requests, the Pope is aware of the hardships they entail: “hyper-digitalization can shatter attention; the crisis of relationships can hurt the psyche; social insecurity and inequalities can extinguish desire. Yet, precisely here, Catholic education can be a beacon<\/strong>, not a nostalgic refuge, but a laboratory of discernment, pedagogical innovation, and prophetic testimony. Drawing new maps of hope; this is the urgency of the mandate\u201d<\/strong><\/em> (11.1).<\/p>\n

Entrusting this path to the Virgin Mary, Seat of Wisdom<\/em>, and to all holy educators, Pope Leo addresses a final exhortation to Pastors, consecrated persons, lay people, heads of institutions, teachers, and students: \u201cbe servers of the educational world, choreographers of hope, tireless seekers of wisdom, credible creators of expressions of beauty.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n
