Rome (Italy).<\/strong> On 12 June 2025, at the theater hall of Sacred Heart House in Rome, of Saint John Bosco<\/em> Province (IRO), the Novices of the International Novitiate Mary Help of Christians<\/em> of Castel Gandolfo staged the show “Born to fly”, with the highlights that prepared for the departure to Patagonia of the first six very young missionaries, Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, on 14 November 1877.<\/p>\n

Present In the theater was the Superior General of the FMA Institute Mother Chiara Cazzuola, with the General Councilors, the Communities of\u00a0 Sacred Heart<\/em> and Mary Help of Christians<\/em> of\u00a0 the Generalate, the novices of PIME, some young Salesians of Don Bosco, FMA from the other Houses of Rome, and young people.<\/p>\n

In giving the welcome, the Novice Formator, Sister Luisa Menozzi, thanked Paola Staiano, “for the wise guidance, direction, and loving care” with which she accompanied the Novices “step by step” throughout the year in expression, in diction, in\u00a0 writing\u00a0 the script, and stressed the formative aspect of the experience. “This allowed them to interact with each other, to experiment in dynamics, to facilitate, but also to struggle in relations among themselves. Above all, it allowed them to be fascinated by the study of the charismatic sources, to recognize behind an expression with the language of the 19th<\/sup> century, a history that precedes us, touches us, but above all, moves us and gives us courage, determination,”<\/em> above all in view of the 150th<\/sup> of the FMA missions<\/a><\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

From here, the wish of Sister Luisa, “These young Sisters who preceded us, inexperienced but full of love for God, pushed us to \u2018take flight\u2019.<\/em><\/strong> It is also the wish we make to each one of us who are here today. They have gone before us, but they continue to depart with us. They are with us in this beautiful undertaking, that of going beyond one\u2019s own borders, near or far, in order to be able to bring into unexplored lands the love of God, the beauty of His grace, and help everyone to understand that only the love of God can fill a life.”<\/em><\/p>\n

The first scene opens on 14 November 1877<\/strong>, with the departure from the port of Genoa of the first six missionaries – accompanied by Mother Mazzarello, Sister Emilia Mosca, and Sister Enrichetta Sorbone – with the blessing of Don Bosco, impersonated by Fr. Gabriele D’Annibale, Parish Priest of Saints Peter and Paul<\/em> Parish of Aprilia, Rome.<\/p>\n

The large calendar, placed on the side of the scene as a ‘timepiece’, is then brought back to the origins of this great historical event, with the account of the missionary dream that Don Bosco had in 1872, in which he saw “a wild and unknown region” populated by savages, which only later he recognized as Patagonia.<\/p>\n

Then, the viewers are immersed in scenes of ‘daily life’, starting from 1862, by Main and her friend Petronilla first, and then the first FMA, in the construction of the dream of leading to God an ever-increasing number of souls, to broaden our horizons, “Now we are no longer alone in sewing… and not even to eat, sleep, and who knows if one day, we will also arrive in America.”<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Through the lively narration, with a fresh dose of humor reflected in the spirit of Salesian optimism of the first Sisters, the Novices\u00a0 highlighted the ardor and sincere missionary enthusiasm with which they nourished the desire to reach the most distant lands and souls, first of all for Mother Mazzarello, who wrote to Fr. John Cagliero on 8 July 1876:<\/p>\n

“We are expecting you soon. You should \u00a0see how the number Daughters of M.H. C. has increased! (…) You can come and choose a good number to take to America; almost everyone wants to go there. Come soon then, we are really looking forward with all our hearts to seeing you. Now listen to what I have to say: save me a place in America, but seriously! It is true that I am good for nothing, but I know how to make polenta and then, I would see to it that not too much soap would be used when washing the clothes; and if you wish, I will also learn a bit of cooking. I am ready to do everything possible, as long as you will let me come”<\/em> (L 6,10).<\/p>\n

Touching is the presentation of future ones to depart in a suggestive atmosphere, each with her own suitcase and in hand the object that represents her. We are always struck by the very young age at which they embarked on a journey overseas to unknown destinations, from which they will never return, but with so much joy and trepidation in their hearts for the mission that awaits them.<\/em><\/p>\n

After the Audience with Pope Pius IX, from whom they receive the blessing, and the last confidences of the missionaries with their Mother, the time arrives for departure from the port of Genoa, where the ship is about to leave for America, as recounted in the Cronistoria, <\/em>“Mother Mazzarello visits cabin by cabin, berth by berth, to make sure that nothing is missing which can relieve the Sisters of the inconveniences of the journey.”<\/em> (Cron 2\u00b0 Vol. p. 289)<\/em><\/p>\n

As in a still-image, we return to the first scene – “The Sisters kneel around Don Bosco and the Father raises his hand to bless”<\/em> – and the narrative ends with the Founders who, with Sister Emilia Mosca and Sister Enrichetta Sorbone, move away from ship.<\/p>\n

“We are born for flight, from your loving heart Mary, to win souls for God. We are born to fly, to carry your name to the ends of the earth!” <\/em><\/strong>is the chorus of the song on which notes the show ends.<\/p>\n

After the final thanks, Mother Chiara expressed her gratitude to the Novices “for having made us taste how beautiful it is to think about our origins. You have mixed poetry and creativity with the realism of a missionary vocation that has not always been so easy to face. It is beautiful to have drawn on the documents of our Institute. the words of the Cronistoria are heard, of the Letters of Mother Mazzarello. So, it is very beautiful to remember that we started from a small town, (….) and then you make us remember where we were born. Thinking of Mornese comes to mind the words of the psalm: ‘We were all born there’.<\/em><\/p>\n

The missionary vocation is what we live every day of our mission. Therefore, we thank you for the message you have given us.<\/em> We are walking towards the 150th<\/sup> of the 1st<\/sup> expedition. It is not so much to review history, but to project ourselves into the future of the Institute.”<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Mother ended by inviting us to pray for the 2nd<\/sup> year Novices, who will make their First Profession in less than two months, on 5 August.<\/p>\n
