Rome (Italy).<\/strong> The liturgical Solemnity of Mary Help of Christians, which is celebrated on 24 May 2025, is a bit like “Mother\u2019s Day” for the whole Salesian Family.<\/p>\n

For the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, wanted by Don Bosco as a “living monument” of his gratitude to her who “did everything” in his life, this date is linked to their own identity. They imitate Mary, the one who inspired the Institute, Teacher and Mother, to be like her “helpers” especially among young women, as suggested by article 4 of the Constitutions. If we scroll through the biographical notes and the Chronicles of the Houses of the Daughters of Mary Help, there are countless episodes in which recourse to the powerful help of Mary has resolved unpleasant situations, protected from dangers and calamities, healed bodies and souls.<\/p>\n

Sister Maria Troncatti (1883\u20131969) also lived a unique experience of the protection of Mary Help of Christians.<\/strong> In Varazze, in Liguria, where she was between 1909 and 1918, she lived through a period which was decisive for the recovery of her health from the many problems that had befallen her in previous years, but also due to two events which were of great importance to her: the First World War\u00a0 (1914-1918), in which Italy will intervene from 24 May 1915, and the violent storm that caused floods especially affecting Varazze.<\/p>\n

The Chronicle of the House tells that on 25 June 1915, the torrential rain did not cease. Word spread that the Teiro stream had broken its banks. Sister Chiara Novo and Sister Maria, just returned from the course for nurses, were having lunch on the ground floor, while children and educators were taken to the first floor by the Sisters. The sacristan ran into the sacristy to save the sacred vessels. Two went with her, urging her to hurry. But she said, “Oh, before the water comes here… I\u2019ll save myself from the side of the courtyard.”<\/em> The road beyond the wall had become a river in flood; it carried away furniture, cattle, and logs. The Superior went up to the first floor and asked, “Are we all here?” The frightened children repeated the invocations of their teacher, “Jesus, mercy! Mary Help of Christians, pray for us.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Suddenly, along the stretch of road adjacent to the Institute, the wall collapsed from\u00a0 the fury of the waters. The courtyard became a stormy sea. Sister Maria and Sister Chiara did not have time to leave the room as the water already reached the waist. They climbed on the table that swayed on the water which continued rising. Sister Troncatti believed that her last hour had indeed come. “But you must be a missionary,”<\/em> suggested to her an inner voice. The soliloquy became prayer, “Mary Help of Christians, I promise you that if you save me from this flood, I will go as a missionary. I promise you, but save\u00a0 Giacomino, as well,”<\/em> her brother who had left for the war.<\/p>\n

The table was carried out the door and found itself at the crossroads of the currents. The two sisters continued to invoke Mary. But suddenly their “raft” capsized and they had water up to their necks. Sister Maria felt pushed against the wall and touched a blind slat. Without knowing how, she climbed up, found herself on the last joist and could hold on to the railing of the terrace on the first floor. She was safe. But Sister Chiara was desperately gasping, trying not to be carried away by the current. “No, Madonna, not only\u00a0 me…”,<\/em> Sister Maria murmured. “Sister Chiara, cling to the shutter; do as I did.”<\/em> These were terrible moments. A wave pushed the Sister towards the window, but her strength was waning. Sister Maria, holding on to the railing with one hand, stretched out her other arm as far as she could. The two were one palm away from each other and could not touch. Finally, due to a return wave, Sister Chiara could grab the tip of the fingers of Sister Maria… and she was also upright on the shutter.<\/p>\n

They climbed over the railing, and went to the tribune of the church. There a group of Sisters were trying to save the sacristan using sheets, who remained a prisoner of the waters. But it was not possible! When the flood retreated, Sister Maddalena Forzani was found dead, to the great sorrow of all.<\/p>\n

Many years later, Mr. Cosimo Cossu, a Salesian Brother, said, “The name of Mary Help of Christians was always close to her lips, but telling the facts of Varazze the name of Mary Help of Christians tasted different! It was necessary to hear her. She gave it such a moving an expression. (…) She lived her devotion to the Virgin Help of Christians, instilled it in us, in the boys she approached; but the best part was undoubtedly for the Shuarette of the boarding school and for her Sisters.”<\/em><\/p>\n

In fact, the “Informatio super virtutibus” certifies: “Saint John Bosco was the herald, in his time, of devotion to Mary ‘Help of Christians’. The Servant of God assimilated this spirit of filial devotion, which she knew through the Salesian Bulletin from a young age, then with more convinced and full knowledge as a religious, bearing the title of Daughter of Mary Help of Christians. And when she entered the missions of the Ecuadorian East, it can be said that all of Morona-Santiago was happily contagioned with it.”<\/em><\/p>\n

A lady recounts, “Sister Maria loved\u00a0 Mary Help of Christians very much, \u201cCall on Mary Help of Christians and you will see peace in the house”, she would say. She prayed a lot in her little room and used to say, “Pray a lot in your room and God and Mary Help of Christians will save you.” She often said, “Mary, Help of Christians, pray for us.”\u00a0 She always had on this on her lips, “God and Mary Help of Christians”; and addressing the mothers, she said, “You must always trust in Mary Help of Christians.”<\/em><\/p>\n

And another testifies, “I remember the words she addressed to us when she spoke of Mary Help of Christians, of the graces and favors she grants, of the miracles (…). And when she gave them [to the natives or Shuar] an image of Mary Help of Christians, she said: “I will heal you with remedies, but the real healings will be done by Mary Help of Christians; here you have the prayer.”<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

In the face of such confidence, the Help of Christians never failed to manifest, in one way or another, her powerful help.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
