Rome (Italy).<\/strong> On 27 January 2025, the International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Holocaust is celebrated, on\u00a0 the 80th<\/sup> anniversary<\/strong> of the liberation of the extermination of the Nazi extermination camp at Auschwitz, Poland, on 27 January 1945. The International Day was established on 1 November 2005, by the United Nations, on the 60th<\/sup> anniversary of the end of the Second World War.<\/p>\n

“The remembrance of the Holocaust and education to dignity and human rights” <\/strong>is the theme chosen by the United Nations Organization to underline, on such a significant anniversary, the importance of the remembrance of the Holocaust for the present moment, In which the dignity and human rights of the human beings who inhabit the planet are attacked daily.<\/p>\n

The Holocaust shows what happens when hatred, dehumanization, and indifference do not allow for the recognition of the other as a person. “Its remebrance is a guard against the denial of humanity and a clear call to collective action to guarantee respect for human dignity and rights and international law that protects them,”<\/em> reads the United Nations website.<\/p>\n

Remembrance restores dignity to those whom the Nazis tried to annihilate, safeguards the memories of survivors and their testimony, so that the spiral of hatred in the name of power and prevarication on peoples may stop, so that we do not repeat the same atrocities of 80 years ago.<\/p>\n

On the occasion of this day, there are many initiatives “so as not to forget” in schools and, in general, in cities, especially those where there are Jewish communities that count numerous deportees and victims in concentration camps.<\/p>\n

One of these are the \u201cStumbling Stones<\/span><\/a>\u201d<\/strong>: small square blocks of stone covered with brass<\/strong>, placed in front of the door of the house where a deportee had last residence in the Nazi extermination camps, which recall the name, the year of birth, the day and place of deportation, the date of death.<\/p>\n

More than physical, it is an emotional and mental stumbling stone<\/strong>, whose aim is to keep alive the memory of the victims of the Nazi-fascist ideology in the symbolic place\u00a0 of daily life – their home – at the same time, inviting\u00a0 those who pass to reflect on what happened in that place and on that date, so as not to forget<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

There are already more than 70,000 stumbling stones installed in Europe – the first one in Cologne, Germany, in 1995 – born from the idea of the artist Gunter Demnig who, adopting a passage of the Talmud, affirmed, “A person is forgotten only when his\/her name is forgotten.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

In Italy, the first Stumbling Stones were laid in Rome in 2010, in the Jewish ghetto, and currently they are found in Bolzano, Genoa, L’Aquila, Livorno, Milan, Reggio Emilia, Siena, Turin, Venice, and several other smaller centers.<\/p>\n

After the Angelus on Sunday, 26 January, Pope Francis recalled the anniversary, stressing the importance of not forgetting and educating young people to fraternity, forgiveness, and peace:<\/p>\n

“Tomorrow is the International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust: eighty years since the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp. The horror of the extermination of millions of Jews and other faiths in those years cannot be forgotten or denied.<\/strong> (…) We also remember many Christians, among whom there are numerous martyrs. I renew my appeal for everyone to work together to eradicate the scourge of anti-Semitism, along with all forms of discrimination and religious persecution. Let us build together a more fraternal, more just world, educating young people to have an open heart for all, in the logic of fraternity, forgiveness, and peace.”<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
