Rome (Itay). <\/strong>On 24 January 2025, on the liturgical memory of Saint Francis de Sales, patron of journalists and communicators, Pope Francis announces the Message for the 59th<\/sup> World Social Communications Day (WCMC), which is celebrated in May:<\/p>\n

Share with meekness the hope that is in your hearts<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

The Holy Father addresses a heartfelt appeal to journalists and communicators, to put into practice their “courageous commitment”<\/em> – needed “today more than ever”,<\/em> in this time “marked by disinformation and polarization” <\/em>– to put at the center of communication “the personal and collective responsibility towards your neighbor”<\/em> and be “communicators of hope<\/strong>“,<\/em> according to the theme of the Jubilee, “starting with a renewal of your work and mission in accordance with the spirit of the Gospel.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Disarming\u00a0 communication <\/strong><\/p>\n

Aware that words are often like sharp blades and are used as weapons, as in the case of fake news, “to launch messages designed to excite the spirits, to provoke, to hurt”<\/em>, Pope Francis reiterates “the need to ‘disarm’ communication, to purify it from aggression.”<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Another phenomenon that he highlights with concern is the “programmed dispersion of attention”<\/em> through digital systems, which profile users according to market logics, controlling their attention through algorithms and altering their perception of reality. The Pope expresses concern about the far more subtle consequences of a marketing action, which end up undermining the foundations of common living:<\/p>\n

“We are thus witnessing, often powerless, a sort of atomization of interests, and this ends up undermining the basis of our being community, the ability to work together for the common good, to listen to each other, to understand the reasons of the other.”\u00a0\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n

“We cannot give in to this logic,”<\/em><\/strong> he warns, quoting Fr. Tonino Bello, Italian Bishop on the way to holiness, who in a homily pointed out how all conflicts “find their root when faces melt away and disappear.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Precisely in the year when we are encouraged to find in hope an anchor to give meaning to the many dramatic situations of the world, Pope Francis strikes again for humanity with his words, with which he knows how to be close to ordinary people, and admits that “Hope in reality, is not easy at all.”<\/em><\/p>\n

However, “hope is a risk that must be taken. It is the risk of risks”, he says shortly after quoting Georges Bernanos, and recalls that “for Christians hope is not an optional choice but an indispensable condition”,<\/strong> that hope is a “hidden, tenacious and patient” virtue, a “performative” virtue, capable of changing life and that, as Benedict XVI said in the Encyclical Spe Salvi, “Who has hope lives differently; he was given a new life.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Give reason with meekness for the hope that is in us <\/strong><\/p>\n

The Holy Father finds a wonderful synthesis of the link between hope, witness, and Christian communication in the First Letter of Peter (3:15-16): “Worship the Lord, Christ, in your hearts, always ready to answer anyone who asks you the reason for the hope that is in you. However, this must be done with kindness and respect.”<\/em><\/p>\n

There are three messages that helps to derive from this text. First of all, hope for Christians is not disembodied, but “it has a face, the face of the risen Lord”,<\/em> and trusting in the promise of His presence, through the gift of the Holy Spirit, helps to “hope against all hope”<\/em> even when “everything seems lost”.<\/em> Secondly, regarding the question on the reasons for hope, rather than giving articulated answers, it should be simply the reflection of His Presence of love in each one to speak about it. “It is the love lived that raises the question and requires an answer. Why do you live like this? Why are you like this?”<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

The last message, perhaps the most significant one, concerns the “how<\/strong>” – “with sweetness and respect”<\/em> – a style of which Jesus is Master in the dialogue with the two disciples of Emmaus. “The communication of Christians – but I would also say the communication in general – should be woven with meekness, with closeness.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Starting from this passage, Pope Francis gives expression to his “dream about communication”,<\/em><\/strong> a communication that knows how to make itself close, that knows how to “speak to the heart”, focusing on beauty and hope, that knows how to give reasons for hope, instead of selling illusions and fears. It is a communication in which the communicator is not at the mercy of mania for self-promotion or self-absorption, but helps the listener and reader to “find the best part of themselves”.<\/em> “Communicating in this way helps us to become ‘pilgrims of hope’, as the motto of the Jubilee states.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hope Together<\/strong><\/p>\n

The path proposed by the Pope is not “alone”, because “hope is always a community project”<\/em> and “we travel together”<\/em> to cross the Holy Door in this Jubilee that “has many social implications” <\/em>and indicates the need for communication that is “attentive, meek, reflective, able to indicate ways of dialogue.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Hence the Pope\u2019s beautiful encouragement “to discover and tell the many stories of good hidden among the folds of the news; to imitate the gold seekers, who tirelessly sift through the sand in search of the tiny nugget. (…) To “find the sparks of good that allow us to hope. This communication can help to weave communion, make us feel less alone, rediscover the importance of walking together.”<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Do not forget the heart<\/strong><\/p>\n

The last invitation is to take care of your heart, your inner life. An invitation that could appear generic, if it was not accompanied,\u00a0 by, as a Father knows how to do, by some very concrete “traces” that complete this intense Message concluded by the wish that becomes prayer: “All this you can and we can do with the grace of God, which the Jubilee helps us to receive in abundance. For this I pray and bless each of you and your work.”<\/em><\/p>\n
