{"id":126525,"date":"2025-01-18T18:38:19","date_gmt":"2025-01-18T17:38:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cgfmanet.org\/infosphere\/settimana-di-preghiera-per-lunita-dei-cristiani-2025\/"},"modified":"2025-01-13T17:00:59","modified_gmt":"2025-01-13T16:00:59","slug":"week-of-prayer-for-christian-unity-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cgfmanet.org\/en\/infosphere\/week-of-prayer-for-christian-unity-2025\/","title":{"rendered":"Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Rome (Italy).<\/strong> From 18 to 25 January 2025, between the Feast of the Chair of Saint Peter and that of the conversion of Saint Paul, the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is celebrated, an ecumenical initiative in which Christians from all over the world, belonging to different traditions and confessions, gather together spiritually in prayer for the unity of the Church.<\/p>\n<p>In the southern hemisphere, where January is a holiday period, churches celebrate the Week of Prayer on other dates, for example at Pentecost, which is also a significant time for Church unity. Beyond the date, it is important that throughout the year, we try to find the opportunity to pray together to seek unity among Christians.<\/p>\n<p>The International Committee appointed by the Dicastery for the Promotion of Christian Unity (<em>DPUC<\/em>) and the Faith and Constitution Commission of the World Council of Churches (<em>CEC<\/em>) to review and prepare material for Week 2025 met in Italy, at the Monastery of Bose, in the province of Biella, from 11 to 15 September 2023. The drafting of the handbook was in fact entrusted to the <strong>Monastic Community of Bose<\/strong>, which had appointed a group of Brothers and Sisters of the Community to draw up the first draft of the text. During the meeting, this local group worked with the International Committee for the final revision of the text. The meeting was co-chaired by Reverend Mikie Roberts of the CEC in Geneva, and Reverend Martin Browne, OSB, of the DPUC.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Do you believe this?&#8221;<\/strong> (<em>John 11:26<\/em>) is the biblical reference text for the Week that takes its inspiration from the dialogue between Jesus and Martha, during Jesus&#8217; visit to the house of Martha and Mary in Bethany, after the death of their brother Lazarus, narrated by the evangelist John. Jesus leads Martha to believe in the resurrection, and reveals His identity as Messiah: <em>&#8220;I am the resurrection and life. Whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live; indeed, who lives and believes in me will never die&#8221;<\/em> (vv. 25 &#8211; 26). After this statement, Jesus asks Martha a very direct and deeply personal question: <strong><em>&#8220;Do you believe this?&#8221;<\/em><\/strong> (v. 26). Like Martha, the first Christians could not remain indifferent or passive in front of these words of Jesus that touched and scrutinized their hearts. They tried to give an understandable answer to the question of Jesus: &#8220;Do you believe this?&#8221;. Thus, the Fathers of Nicaea endeavored to find the right words to express the Mystery of the Incarnation and the Passion, Death and Resurrection of their Lord in its entirety. In the expectation of His return, Christians throughout the world are called to witness together to this faith in the resurrection, which is a source of hope and joy to be shared with all peoples.<\/p>\n<p>Significant is also the occurance this year that celebrates the <strong>1700th anniversary of the first ecumenical council of Christians held at Nicaea in 325 A.D.<\/strong> This commemoration offers an opportunity to reflect and celebrate the faith of Christians, as expressed in the Creed formulated during that Council, a faith still alive and fruitful today.<\/p>\n<p>The 2025 Week of Prayer therefore invites us to draw on this shared heritage and to enter more deeply into the faith that unites us as Christians. Living the apostolic faith\u00a0 together does not mean reopening the theological controversies of then, prolonged in the centuries, but rather to re-read, in prayer, the foundations of the Word of God and the ecclesial experiences that led to the celebration of the Council and motivated its decisions.<\/p>\n<p>On the anniversary of the Council of Nicaea, the ecumenical celebration of the Word of God of the Week is centered on the meaning of believing and affirming the faith, both personal and communal: <strong><em>&#8220;I believe&#8221; and, together, &#8220;we believe&#8221;.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The resources<\/strong> (in different languages) include an introduction to the theme, an ecumenical service, a selection of short readings and prayers for each day of the week. Bearing in mind the ecumenical significance of 2025, short patristic texts have also been inserted, mostly from the first millennium, to offer a glimpse of the Christian reflection of the time and to help situate the definitions of the Council of Nicaea in the context in which they originated and by which they were influenced.
