Rome (Italy).<\/strong> On 1 January 2025, the Solemnity of Mary Most Holy, Mother of God, and at the beginning of the new year, marked by the Ordinary Jubilee, the 58th<\/sup> World Day of Peace is celebrated. Established by Pope Paul VI in 1968, the Day is an invitation to prayer and reflection on this gift to be asked incessantly, to promote paths oriented towards peace for all humanity.<\/p>\n

Forgive us our trespasses, grant us your peace<\/strong>, is the theme chosen by Pope Francis, who motivates it as follows:<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the dawn of this New Year given to us by our heavenly Father, a year of Jubilee in the spirit of hope, I offer heartfelt good wishes of peace to every man and woman. I think especially of those who feel downtrodden, burdened by their past mistakes, oppressed by the judgment of others and incapable of perceiving even a glimmer of hope for their own lives. Upon everyone I invoke hope and peace, for this is a Year of Grace born of the Heart of the Redeemer!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Indeed, the original meaning of the Jubilee – in which a ram\u2019s horn (yobel<\/em>) announced every forty-nine years, a year of clemency and liberation for all the people – is the commitment to “restore the justice of God in various sectors of life.”<\/em><\/p>\n

“Today too, the Jubilee is an event that urges us to seek the liberating justice of God on the whole earth,” <\/strong><\/em>the Pope thus recalls.<\/em><\/p>\n

When we speak of debts, justice, we cannot but think of the peoples crushed by injustice and inequality, in the face of wealthy nations that exploit their wealth without regard for the condition of others:<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Jubilee event invites us to undertake various changes, in order to face the current situation of injustice and inequality, remembering that the goods of the earth are destined not only for some privileged people, but for all (…). It is an appeal to solidarity, but above all to justice.”<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

The cultural and structural change needed to surmount this crisis will come about when we finally recognize that we are all sons and daughters of the one Father, that we are all in His debt but also that we need one another, in a spirit of shared and diversified responsibility. We will be able to rediscover once for all that we need one another\u201d and are indebted one to another.<\/strong>” <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

A journey of hope: three possible actions<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cConsequently, at the beginning of this Year of Grace, I would like to offer three proposals capable of restoring dignity to the lives of entire peoples and enabling them to set them out anew on the journey of hope. In this way, the debt crisis can be overcome and all of us can once more realize that we are debtors whose debts have been forgiven.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

First of all, with regard to international debt: “the more prosperous countries ought to feel called to do everything possible to forgive the debts<\/strong> of those countries that are in no condition to repay the amount they owe.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Secondly, I also ask for a firm commitment to respect for the dignity of human life<\/strong> from conception to natural death, \u201cso that each person can cherish his or her own life and all may look with hope to a future of prosperity and happiness for themselves and for their children. Without hope for the future, it becomes hard for the young to look forward to bringing new lives into the world.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Concluding, the Holy Father dares to relaunch an appeal, recalling his predecessors,\u00a0Saint Paul VI\u00a0and\u00a0Benedict XVI,\u00a0\u00a0\u201cfor the sake of future generations<\/strong><\/em>. In this time marked by wars, let us use at least a fixed percentage of the money earmarked for armaments to establish a global Fund to eradicate hunger and facilitate in the poorer countries educational activities aimed at promoting sustainable development and combating climate change.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Mother Chiara Cazzuola<\/strong>, in her Christmas Message for 2024, \u201cEmbrace of Peace<\/a><\/strong>\u201d<\/span>, urges to be collaborators of this advent of peace, “Let us be ever more those men and women ‘on whom His favor rests’, to whom the Lord, our only salvation, gives passion to collaborate in the advent of His peace, so that He may finally enter and take up a stable abode in this world.”<\/em><\/p>\n

This is the wish of Pope Francis: “May 2025 be a year in which peace flourishes!<\/em><\/strong> A true and lasting peace that goes beyond quibbling over the details of agreements and human compromises.\u00a0May we seek the true peace that is granted by God to hearts disarmed…<\/em> Disarming hearts is a job for everyone, great and small, rich and poor alike. At times, something quite simple will do, such as \u201ca smile, a small gesture of friendship, a kind look, a ready ear, a good deed.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

And it is also the invocation with which he concludes the Message for Peace 2025<\/a><\/span><\/strong>: \u201cLord, grant us your peace!<\/em><\/strong> This is my prayer to God as I now offer my cordial good wishes for the New Year to the Heads of State and Government, to the leaders of International Organizations, to the leaders of the various religions, and to every person of good will.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
