Studi di storia della Chiesa&#8221; (You are the Temple of the Living God. Studies on the history of the Church), written by Sister Maria Stella Calicchia, FMA of <em>Our Lady of the Cenacle<\/em> Province (ILS).<\/p>\n<p>The presentation of the author:<\/p>\n<p>The volume reconstructs, on the basis of documents and testimonies, what was accomplished by the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians and by religious, men and women religious and priests in 1945, during the Second World War, in favor of prisoners in Camp 337 of Coltano, Pisa.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The research work undertaken within the studies of the ACSSA (Association of Curators of Salesian History)<\/strong> certainly does not claim exhaustiveness, also because after so long, the witnesses of the facts can no longer tell them, and we must search for traces with commitment and a lot of time among the archives, documents, memories, and testimonies that remain. My attention was to bring to light the humble silent story of these women of God who were &#8220;angels&#8221; in the hell of a prison camp, and to make known, at least a little, the faces and features of those involved in this painful story.<\/p>\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"bcCbnQj-1Lg\"><iframe title=\"1945: le Figlie di Maria Ausiliatrice &quot;angeli&quot; di Coltano.\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bcCbnQj-1Lg?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" data-load-mode=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><strong>The research wants to recount what was realized by the FMA of Livorno and Pisa in 1945, in favor of the prisoners of Camp 337 of Coltano (Pisa), the largest prison camp in Italy, in which they passed from 32,000 to 38,000 Italians from 9 to 80 years of age.<\/strong> The Americans, going up the Peninsula to free Italy from the Germans, created these detention camps that, in the confusion of the moment, saw incarcerated men taken without too much discernment, and at the end of the war the concentration camps in Italy were more than 400. Inside the camp, there was a bit of everything, from petty thieves to SS members; from the unwary taken at random due to bad luck, to young men forced to enlist, from orphans to the elderly and even 994 partisans.<\/p>\n<p>Almost 80 years after these events, it is significant to reread what the Salesian Sisters of the time did: beyond flags or political positions, it was a choice born of suffering humanity. Children, young people, the elderly, the sick and mutilated, were all placed in small Canadian tents comfortable enough for two people, but where they had to stay, after dusk, in 6 or 8, equipped with a single blanket. An expanse of reclaimed land prepared by the Americans, the size of a square kilometer without a tree or a blade of grass, hosted this humanity from April to November, distributed in ten lots or enclosures with triple rows of barbed wire and control towers every 500 meters, with soldiers armed with machine guns and equipped with powerful beacons for surveillance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Sisters contributed their help and support until the Camp closed.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In Coltano concentration camp the suffering was dehumanizing, because the prisoners lived in isolation. Not being able to share with anyone the abuses, physical and psychological violence, hunger and environmental conditions imposed, prevented these people from being able to share their condition. The filter of relationships that makes life human did not exist here. As in all the prison camps of history, humanity was degraded.<\/p>\n<p><strong>From July to November 1945,<\/strong> these courageous women, with sacrifice and great generosity, carried out a relief mission by mediating between the Holy See and the American Command which, in the first place, had jurisdiction over the Camp. Later, when it passed to the Italian government, it was a reference point together with the Archbishopric of Pisa, with the noble figure of Mons. Gabriele Vettori, Archbishop at the time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>They were women of high human, spiritual, and cultural depth, who were able to read the history of their time and have had the ability to make choices that fit the most urgent needs of the moment<\/strong>. With intelligence and even a little cunning, beginning from the month of August, they obtained that these prisoners were granted: the recognition of rights and, with this recognition, the opportunity to have talks with family members, to be able to send and receive mail, packages, and as much as was necessary to live.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Their entry and exit from the Camp gradually replaced the barbed wire with the &#8220;thread&#8221; of Christian charity and opened hearts to hope.<\/strong> With this &#8220;thread&#8221; they were able to weave the warp and woof of a web of collaborations that expanded to priests, religious, associations, soldiers, and people of good will who contributed to the reconstruction of Italian society.<\/p>\n<p>To discover that the Sisters who, with the great foresight and generous openness of Mother Lelia Rigoli, Provincial of Liguria and Tuscany at that time, formed a real reference center in Livorno and also in Pisa for family members who from all over Italy poured into these two cities, with the means and hardships of the time, in search of their husband, brother or son of which they had no news. Imagine them in the transformation of the school into real offices for permits, for the sorting of mail, for the preparation of food packages and clothing for prisoners. To see the generous welcome offered to family members by sharing and transforming necessary environments into dormitories to spend the night and expand the canteen to feed and comfort those who arrived.
