Sr Lucy Rose Ozhukayil – Visiting Councilor

She was born in 1952 in the state of Kerala, India to a family in which she breathed a climate of human and Christian values.  After her university studies, she transferred to Northeast India where she taught as a lay teacher in the school of Tezpur, Assam, run by the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians.  It was her first encounter with the Salesian Sisters and her vocation was born in that environment.  She was fascinated by the family spirit and by being together with the young people.

After her initial formation, she makes her First Profession as an FMA on August 5, 1979 at Shillong.  In 1981 in Rome, she frequents the Course of Social Communications and Salesian Spirituality at the Pontifical Faculty of the Science of Education ‘Auxilium’.  Upon her return to her Province, she carries out various apostolic activities and assumes the tasks of teacher, Secondary School Principal, Assistant to the Temporary Professed and the Novices.  She was Novice Formator at Shillong and then was nominated Provincial of Mother of the Church Province of Guwahati, when it separated from the Shillong Province.

Sr. Lucy shows a strong love for the Institute, together with a capacity to actualize the charism and communicate it.  In the intercultural and multicultural reality of the Province, she sought to create and maintain the spirit of communion and the family spirit of the Salesian style.

Sustained by a deep interior life and devotion to the Eucharist and to Mary Help of Christians, she accompanied the growth of the Province and followed the formation of the numerous young people and sisters.  With the heart of a Mother, she is attentive to the sisters, opening the doors to the poor and the marginalized.

She promoted missionary activities in the Province in favor of the families and for the development of women.  In addition to English and Italian, Sr. Lucy Rose also speaks some of the languages of her people.  As Provincial in her service of animation and government, she chooses the words of Our Lady: “Do whatever he tells you”, that she continues to live as a Visiting Councilor after her election at General Chapter XXII.

In General Chapter XXIII, when the Chapter members ask her to continue as a Visiting Councilor for another six year term, she renews her trust in the Lord and in Mary by saying, “above all when there is need to transform water into wine for the Kingdom of God”.  Sr. Lucy Rose has visited various Province realities in Asia, Africa, Europe, and Oceania.
