Rome (Italy). The Holy Father has appointed Sr. Alessandra Smerilli, Daughter of Mary Help of Christians, Secretary of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development.
Committed to the service of the Church and the world as Councilor of the Vatican City State and Consultor of the Synod of Bishops, since August 2021 she was Secretary ad interim of this Dicastery and Delegate for the Vatican Covid-19 Commission.
The Holy Father has also appointed Cardinal Michael Czerny, S.I., hitherto ad interim prefect of the same Dicastery and Under-Secretary of the Dicastery for Integral Human Development, with the responsibility of the Dicastery, Prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development. Also appointed with the responsibility for the Migrants and Refugees Sector and Special Projects, was Fr. Fabio Baggio, C.S., currently Under-Secretary of the Migrants and Refugees Section.
Sr. Alessandra expresses gratitude to Pope Francis for the appointment:
“I thank Holy Father Francis for the trust he has once again placed in me. I am happy to be able to work together with Cardinal Michael Czerny and Fr. Fabio Baggio, putting ourselves at the service of promoting the integral development of each person, of peace among peoples, and the care of our common home”.
The Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development was established by Pope Francis on 1 January 2017 and “promotes integral human development by drawing inspiration from the Gospel and in the wake of the theology and social doctrine of the Church. It studies and collects news and results of investigations about justice and peace, the progress of peoples, the promotion and protection of dignity and human rights, disarmament and armed conflicts, as well as their tragic consequences on the civilian population and on the natural environment. By integrating, relating, and having dialogue between the various social systems, such as economy, finance, work, politics, culture, the Dicastery works to ensure that the social teaching of the Church is made known and put into practice”.
The Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians assures Sr. Alessandra Smerilli of its prayerful supports and encourages her to continue to carry out this mandate in continuity with the commitment she had assumed for the integral promotion of the person, for peace, and for the care of creation, with a Salesian outlook that values the positive aspect in every reality, especially that of the young.
