London 2012: the Olympic Games and the Young

Soon the lighting of the Olympic torch will mark the official start of the London Olympics 2012. Already, many people from the whole world are arriving in Great Britain to take part in the most important international sports event.

The opening of the games is slated for July 27, and until August 12, the order of the day will be sports. Although, as in every great event that is respected there have been some criticisms of the organization of London 2012, for 16 days the whole world will cheer and will dream alongside the athletes.

Some curious notes for this edition…Her name is Nur Suryani Mohd Taib . She is thirty years old and comes from Malaysia . This athlete is eight months pregnant and, even though she will soon be a mother, she is taking part in the games under the archery discipline.

Guor Marial, a twenty-eight year old Sudanese, will participate in the games as an independent athlete. South Sudan acquired its independence only a year ago and does not yet have an Olympic commission. The marathon runner has refused the proposal to compete under the flag of North Sudan because of the violence perpetrated by the northern government against Marial and his family.

These Athletes show how the passion for sports goes beyond, beyond nations, and beyond obstacles. It is something more, good for the spirit and the body. It is not by chance that the ancient Romans professed mens sana in corpore sano.

Like the playground, sports are an educative place and one of privileged gathering. Sports stimulate in the young a capacity to stay together, to form a team. It brings solidarity, healthy competitiveness, and good health habits. For this reason, the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians have always promoted sports activities among the young, placing at their disposal their own places and knowledge. Soccer, Basketball, Volleyball, artistic gymnastics, skating, dance, and Karate, just to cite a few, besides being sources of equilibrium, develop specific aspects of the integral formation of the young.
