FMA Accreditation at the UN

FMA Accreditation at the UN Rome, Italy.  On June 6th the request of the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians (FMA) to be accredited by ECOSOC (Economic and Social Council) of the United Nations was accepted.  This prestigious recognition allows us to be present as an Institute in our own right at the meetings held at the UN and it opens the possibility of our acting independently from VIDES International in the Human Rights Office in Geneva.  The association of VIDES International had previously received this accreditation.  Until now, in fact, it was VIDES that allowed us to participate as an Institute in the Council of Human Rights.
This is, therefore, a great opportunity that opens before us, but it is also a great responsibility, both for VIDES as an NGO promoted by the Institute, and the FMA Institute itself.  According to the criteria of animation of the General Council, they could both be a voice for the poorest and most abandoned young people on this great world stage.
We are grateful to Sr. Phyllis Neves, Provincial of the United States East (SUA), who took on the responsibility of being our interpreter in responding to the questions asked by the NGO Committee in charge of studying the requests.  We are also grateful to Fr. Thomas Brennan, SDB, representative at the UN, for his help and support. Sr. Phyllis acted in connection with Sr. Maria de los Angeles Contreras, Councilor for the Salesian Family and Sr. Bernadette Sangma, Consulter in the same sector, who have accompanied the application of the request in the name of the Institute.  The recognition came about in record time in comparison with others that had a much longer course.
