World Youth Day, it’s worth it!
On Sunday, April 5, we celebrated the XXIV World Youth Day. In Rome, the highlight of the event was the handing over of the World Youth Day cross and icon by the delegation from Sydney to the delegation from Madrid.
This event, started in 1986 by Pope John Paul II and continued by Pope Benedict XIV, has now become a tradition, attracting immense press coverage. The organization is becoming more and more sophisticated in line with a fast-changing world and as host-countries learn from their predecessors’ experiences. With the enormous resources that the World Youth Days entails, is it worth it?
In the ongoing meeting organized by the Pontifical Council Pro Laicis, Bishop Anthony Fisher presented the Pastoral impact of the World Youth Day in Australia. What he reported was the result of a research project entitled Pilgrims’ Progress 2008, conducted prior to, during and after WYD2008. Seven out of ten surveyed rated the WYD2008 as one of the best experiences of their lives, for some, even life-changing. Among the major outcomes in the Church in Australia, he cited five: conversions; new confidence in their faith; new service and assumption of leadership; diocesan and parish renewal; and effects on the wider community. The Bishop’s presentation was made more vivid as he quoted testimonies and recounted anecdotes. Australian young people themselves are asking for a post-World Youth Day journey in order to help them grow in their faith through retreats, regular get-togethers with other WYD pilgrims, national gatherings of young Catholics, opportunities to dialogue with Church leaders, more youth-oriented Masses, more opportunities for service in the Church, on-line resources to learn more about the Catholic faith.
I guess these reasons are pretty good enough to say that it’s worth it.
But I reserve the best compliment to a non-Catholic police commissioner of Sydney who was quoted by Cardinal George Pell, “The World Youth Day restored the faith of my policemen in young people.”
